Tablelands Music Lovers club-house – Grainger Lane, Atherton
This TFF introductory sound engineering course is tailored for beginners eager to explore both digital and analogue audio technologies. Facilitated by experienced sound engineers Tablelands Folk Festival’s Michael Hodgkins and Tablelands Music Lovers’ David Lynch.
Over four weekly classes, participants will gain foundational knowledge and practical skills, culminating in a hands-on exercise at the festival.
- 6 pm, Thursday September 24. $5 cover charge
In the first week, students learn about the basics of sound, signal flow, and the essential components of analogue systems, including mixing desks, microphones, and cabling.
- 6 pm Thursday October 1. $5 cover charge
The second class shifts focus to digital audio, covering interfaces, digital mixers, and software used in modern production environments.
- 6 pm Thursday October 8. $5 cover charge
The third session brings analogue and digital worlds together, teaching how to integrate both systems and troubleshoot common issues encountered in live and studio settings.
Emphasis is placed on understanding the strengths and limitations of each approach.
- 7.30 pm Saturday October 17. $5 cover charge for workshop participants. Audience cover charge $10 for TFF or TML members, $15 for non-members
In the final week, students prepare for their practical assessment by setting up a small PA system and rehearsing a live mix scenario featuring a showcase of some of our 2026 Festival Performers
Tablelands Music Lovers hosted ‘Tablelands Folk Festival Showcase Event’
leading into the Festival will be open to the public and will be a fabulous evening of top shelf North Queensland entertainment.
The highlight of the course is an immersive hands-on experience at the October 23-25, 2026 Tablelands Folk Festival, where participants apply their new skills assisting with stage setup, soundchecks, and live mixing.
This real-world exposure ensures graduates leave with confidence and a practical understanding of sound engineering fundamentals, ready to support live events or continue their studies further.
